Review: Alien: Covenant Origins by Alan Dean Foster

Alien: Covenant Origins Alien: Covenant Origins by Alan Dean Foster
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Alan Dean Foster’s ‘Alien: Covenant - Origins’ ventures into the ‘Alien’ universe with a unique take on the iconic franchise. It diverges from the conventional portrayal of Weyland-Yutani as pure villains, instead presenting the corporation as a complex entity with its own motivations. This fresh perspective adds depth to the story.

However, the novel departs from the anticipated prequel narrative, opting for a plot centered around the ‘Earthsavers,’ a group trying to thwart the Covenant mission. This shift may disappoint those expecting a deeper exploration of characters like David and Shaw.

While introducing intriguing characters like Captain Branson (played by James Franco in the film) and Hideo Yutani, ‘Origins’ leans more toward being a thriller than a classic ‘Alien’ horror story. The absence of Xenomorphs and the comedic aspects of the ‘Earthsavers’ may not align with traditional ‘Alien’ expectations.

Despite some entertaining moments and world-building, ‘Alien: Covenant - Origins’ might primarily appeal to dedicated franchise enthusiasts looking for character insights. However, it may fall short of being a ‘must-read’ due to its deviation from the expected prequel narrative and the absence of the classic ‘Alien’ elements.
